Can the street safety on GARDEN STREET, between Clarke Avenue and Pulgas Avenue be enhanced so that students biking, skating or walking to and from SCHOOL can do so with more confidence that their safety is not in peril? Students are forced onto the driving area of a narrow street inasmuch as there are NO sidewalks, curb or gutters. Overall this is a daily scary situation, especially early morning and late afternoon.
Frankly, the area immediately could benefit from
1- More speed bumps.
2- Better signage (slow, school ahead, watch for children, etc.).
3- Enhanced lighting (stronger lighting on existing poles, with added lighting) when it is dark in the morning and late afternoon
4- Budgeting for sidewalks
5- Budgeting for curb and gutters.
6- Enforcing Food Trucks parking further away from the school grounds.
7- Discussing this at a Districtwide or Citywide Safety Meeting.
8- Asking School Officials for their observations, advice, guidance, suggestions, recommendations, and perhaps funding, if funding is available.
9- Seeking Grant Funds for projects like this, either from government or private sources.
10- Can Police patrols insure that cars are NOT speeding, as this is witnessed nearly on a daily basis?
I know this is a lot to ask, but it is a miracle that kids are not injured or killed along this block. At a minimum, I have heard many say they are scarred to death. That is no way to start the day in a learning environment.
Can anything be done now, with other projects scheduled for later this year? Thank you kindly for your time and consideration and for all you do to keep our community safe and secure. It is much appreciated.
