Chief's Community Update - October 29, 2023

Halloween on Gardenia 2023

Thank you for visiting our website and taking a moment to read this community update.

Halloween is coming up on Tuesday this week.  Please drive cautiously and keep your eyes open for our younger community members who may be out trick or treating.

Speaking of trick or treat, the neighbors on the 100 block of Gardenia Way worked together to put together a trick or treat party on Halloween from 5-7 PM.  The East Palo Alto Police Department will be joining them and giving out candy from the trunks of our cars.  Please bring your trick or treaters to join in the festivities.

On October 27, a carload of juvenile suspects committed a robbery on Green at Clarke.  The suspects attacked the juvenile victim before fleeing in the vehicle.  Our patrol team conducted a thorough investigation and identified the suspect vehicle.  A “Be on the Lookout” (BOLO) was sent to all San Mateo County agencies.  Later the same day, an alert Colma Police Officer found the suspect vehicle, arrested the 5 suspects, and located a handgun in the vehicle.  East Palo Alto Police Officers responded to assume the investigation and recovered the victim’s property.

Rolled Curb Parking

Our facility use agreement is completed for the Los Robles School gym and our City team is narrowing in on a date for our community meeting.  I apologize for the long delay, but we are getting there.  Once the date is secured, our City Team will publicize the meeting on our website, Facebook, and Instagram accounts.  Please help us share meeting by telling your friends and neighbors.

We will continue distributing flyers throughout our community where rolled curbs exist.

If anyone wants to help us distribute flyers, please come by the Police Department.

Parking Enforcement

Community members.  Please pay attention to the street sweeping signs on your streets and move your cars to abide by the parking restrictions.  We must keep our streets clean, especially as the weather changes and we begin to depend on our storm drains to keep our streets from flooding.  On Friday, our Community Service Officer had to issue 152 citations for violation of the street sweeping signs.  Please move your cars.  Don’t forget, we enforce the restrictions marked on the sign.  Just because the street sweeper passed by one time does not mean the street is open for parking.

We are hiring!

Do you know someone who is genuinely a good person, has a passion for serving others, and would be a great fit for our department and community please bring them in.  We are hiring for:

  • Police Recruit
  • Police Officer
  • Records Supervisor

Our open recruitments can be found at https://www.calopps.org/city-of-east-palo-alto.

Anonymous tips and immediate service

We appreciate all the anonymous tips we have been receiving.  It is important to note that anonymous tips are not a resource for immediate police response as it is not monitored 24/7.  For immediate police response, either call 9-1-1 or our non-emergency phone number 650-321-1112.  For complaints related to property violations, please contact Code Enforcement department, which operates under our building department (https://www.cityofepa.org/building/page/code-enforcement).

When providing information to the police, we need specific information about the crime or criminal.  As an example, if you are reporting someone for dealing drugs, we need to know:

  • where and when they are selling the drugs
  • a detailed description of them (white female, blue jeans, red jacket, baseball cap)
  • any description of a vehicle
  • any other information you have about the crime.

While we don’t expect you to jeopardize your safety to get this information, it is very important information if we make an arrest.  Not only will your tip provide us with accurate information about the suspect, but we are also able to serve as a witness to the crime and we can testify in court.  Please use these options for providing an anonymous tip.

You can make an anonymous tip to the police by calling or texting to (650) 409-6792.

If there is a topic you would like addressed in the next update, please feel free to send an email at jliu@cityofepa.org

Thank you,
